Borobodur The Borobodur temple complex is one of the greatest Hindu monuments of the world. Erected on a hill in the form of a stepped pyramid with six stories, three circular terraces and a central stupa forming the summit, the whole structure appears like a giant lotus flower. While Borobodur was just a prominent tourist spot in the past, the complex was suddenly sealed off by the Javanese military and members of the Astral Space Preservation Society (ASPS) when the Gunung Merapi erupted. It is rumoured that a great number of disembodied spirits suddenly burst from the stupa’s interior.
